Mass Air Flow Sensor for the M47 2.0L 4-cylinder Td4 diesel engine, mounted in the intake ducting at the air cleaner outlet.

A hot-film sensing element measures the mass of air drawn into the engine and passes the signal to the diesel engine management ECU, which uses it to set injection quantity and to close the loop on exhaust gas recirculation. Contamination of the film element causes the meter to under-read, producing loss of power under load, hesitation and EGR or air-mass fault codes.

The element is sensitive to oil mist and dust; the air filter element and intake ducting should be checked for contamination whenever a sensor is replaced.
