Gearbox Crossmember is a detachable structural member that bolts across the chassis side rails beneath the transmission.

It carries the rear gearbox and transfer box mounting, locating the gearbox tail within the ladder-frame chassis and transmitting drivetrain loads into the chassis rails. The crossmember is removable to allow the gearbox or transfer box to be lowered for service without disturbing the surrounding frame.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Gearbox Crossmember and what does it do?
The Gearbox Crossmember is a detachable structural member that bolts across the chassis side rails beneath the transmission on the Land Rover Defender 1987-2006, Discovery 1 and Range Rover Classic. It carries the rear gearbox and transfer box mounting, locating the gearbox tail within the ladder-frame chassis.
Why would the Gearbox Crossmember need replacing?
The Gearbox Crossmember typically needs replacing when chassis corrosion or accident damage weakens the mounting, since it sits low in the ladder-frame and is exposed to road salt and water. A distorted or rusted crossmember can let the gearbox and transfer box shift under load.
Can the Gearbox Crossmember be removed without dropping the chassis?
Yes, the Gearbox Crossmember is designed to be unbolted and removed so the gearbox or transfer box can be lowered for service without disturbing the surrounding chassis frame. It's a bolt-in member, so fitting typically needs basic hand tools and safe support of the transmission.
