Coolant Expansion Tank Cap rated at 1.4 bar, fitted to the expansion (header) tank of the engine cooling system.

The cap seals the expansion tank and regulates system pressure. It holds the coolant under pressure to raise its boiling point, while a relief valve vents excess pressure once it exceeds the 1.4 bar rating, protecting the tank and hoses. An integral vacuum valve draws coolant back from the overflow as the system cools and contracts.

Frequently asked questions

What does the PCD000070 coolant expansion tank cap do and what is its pressure rating?
The PCD000070 is a 1.4 bar pressure cap for the coolant expansion tank. It maintains system pressure to raise the coolant boiling point and returns overflow coolant to the tank as the engine cools. It fits Discovery 2 (TD5 and V8), Range Rover P38 1995 to 2002 (all engines), and Range Rover L322 TD6 and V8 from VIN 1A001050 up to 2009.
Why does the pressure rating of the cap matter?
The cap must match the system design. Fitting a lower-rated cap causes premature coolant boiling; a higher-rated cap can overpressure hoses and the expansion tank. The PCD000070 is rated at 1.4 bar, the correct specification for the Discovery 2, P38, and early L322 cooling systems.
What are the signs that this coolant cap needs replacing?
A faulty cap can cause coolant loss without a visible external leak, overheating, or a radiator hose that collapses as the engine cools. The internal valve can stick open, allowing pressure to escape. Coolant caps are inexpensive and worth replacing alongside hoses or the expansion tank.
