Thermostat regulates coolant flow within the engine cooling system, with an opening temperature of 82°C.

It remains closed while the engine is cold, restricting coolant to the block so the engine reaches operating temperature quickly. Once the coolant reaches 82°C the thermostat opens, routing flow through the radiator to dissipate heat and hold a stable running temperature. A failed thermostat causes overheating if stuck closed or slow warm-up and overcooling if stuck open.

Frequently asked questions

What does this thermostat do on a Td5 or Puma Land Rover?
This thermostat controls coolant flow in the engine cooling system. It stays shut while the engine is cold so it warms up fast, then opens at its rated 82°C to send coolant through the radiator and hold a steady temperature. It sits in the thermostat housing.
Which Land Rover engines does this thermostat suit?
It suits the Defender 1998-2016 with the Td5 and the 2.4L and 2.2L TDCi Puma diesels, plus the Discovery 2 1998-2004 with the Td5 diesel and V8 petrol. One thermostat covers these engines through the shared housing design.
What are the signs this thermostat needs replacing?
A failing thermostat usually shows up as overheating if it sticks shut, or slow warm-up and a cool-running engine if it sticks open. You'll often see erratic temperature gauge readings. A stuck-shut thermostat can cause serious overheating, so replace it once symptoms appear.
How many thermostats do I need for the job?
You'll typically need one thermostat per engine. It's usually worth renewing the housing seal or gasket at the same time, since these are disturbed during the job and can leak once the old thermostat is removed.
