Thermostat regulates coolant flow within the engine cooling system, with an opening temperature of 82°C.

It remains closed while the engine is cold, restricting coolant to the block so the engine reaches operating temperature quickly. Once the coolant reaches 82°C the thermostat opens, routing flow through the radiator to dissipate heat and hold a stable running temperature. A failed thermostat causes overheating if stuck closed or slow warm-up and overcooling if stuck open.

Frequently asked questions

What does this Land Rover thermostat actually do?
This thermostat manages coolant flow through the engine cooling system. It holds coolant in the block while the engine warms, then opens at its rated 82°C to circulate it through the radiator and stabilise temperature. It seats in the engine's thermostat housing on Td5 and TDCi diesels.
Which models and engines is this thermostat for?
It's for the Defender 1998-2016 fitted with the Td5 or the 2.4L and 2.2L TDCi Puma diesel, and the Discovery 2 1998-2004 with the Td5 diesel or V8 petrol. These engines share the same thermostat and housing arrangement.
What are the symptoms of a worn thermostat?
Common symptoms are overheating from a thermostat stuck closed, or a slow-to-warm, cool-running engine when it sticks open. You may notice the temperature gauge swinging or the heater underperforming. A stuck-closed thermostat can overheat the engine, so replace it once symptoms appear.
