Starter Motor Drive for the Bosch-type starter motor fitted to the 3.5L V8 petrol engine.

The drive carries the pinion and a one-way (overrunning) clutch on the starter armature shaft. When the starter is energised the pinion is thrown forward to mesh with the flywheel ring gear and transmit cranking torque to the engine; once the engine fires the overrunning clutch lets the pinion spin freely and disengage, preventing the running engine from back-driving the armature.

A worn or sticking drive shows up as failure to engage, a grinding mesh with the ring gear, or the starter spinning without turning the engine.
