Woodruff Key for the injection pump drive on the 2.5L 4-cylinder diesel engine (naturally aspirated and turbo).

The semicircular key seats half in a slot in the shaft and half in the keyway of the drive gear, locking the two together so cranking torque is transmitted without slip and the angular relationship between shaft and drive is fixed. This is what holds the injection pump drive in its correct timed position.

A sheared or worn key allows the drive to move on the shaft, upsetting pump timing.

Frequently asked questions

What does the Woodruff key do on the injection pump drive?
The Woodruff key locks the injection pump drive gear to its shaft on the 2.5L 4-cylinder diesel engine. The semicircular key seats half in the shaft slot and half in the drive keyway, fixing the angular position so pump timing holds and torque transmits without slip. It's fitted to the Land Rover Defender 2.5L diesel.
How many Woodruff keys are needed?
Typically one Woodruff key is needed for the injection pump drive. It's a single key, usually renewed whenever the drive gear is removed, since a key that has taken up wear can let the drive shift. Check the keyway and shaft slot for damage when fitting.
Should the Woodruff key be reused or replaced?
Replace the Woodruff key whenever the injection pump drive is disturbed. A key that has been loaded can wear at the edges, and a worn or sheared key lets the drive move on the shaft and upset pump timing. It's a low-cost part that's typically renewed as a matter of course during the job.
