Rocker Shaft for the Gemmer manual recirculating-ball steering box, for left-hand drive Defender applications without power steering.

The rocker shaft (also known as the sector shaft or output shaft) is the primary output component of the Gemmer steering box. Inside the box, a recirculating ball nut rides on the worm shaft and meshes via its teeth with a sector gear mounted on the rocker shaft. As the steering column rotates the worm, the ball nut traverses axially along the worm and rocks the sector gear, rotating the rocker shaft. The drop arm mounts to the external splined end of the rocker shaft and transmits this movement into the steering linkage via the drag link.

Frequently asked questions

What is the RTC5909 rocker shaft and what does it do?
The RTC5909 is the rocker shaft, also called the sector or output shaft, for the Gemmer manual recirculating-ball steering box. It's the output component the drop arm mounts to, transmitting steering movement into the drag link. This is the left-hand drive version.
Which Defenders does this rocker shaft fit?
It fits the Land Rover Defender (1987-2006) with left-hand drive and the manual Gemmer steering box, on vehicles without power steering. Confirm your steering box is the Gemmer manual type before ordering.
Why does the rocker shaft wear and when should it be replaced?
The rocker shaft typically wears at the sector teeth and bearing surfaces, producing steering free play or notchiness at the drop arm. Left unaddressed, worn steering box components reduce steering precision. Replacement is usually part of a steering box overhaul.
Can I fit this rocker shaft at home?
Fitting the rocker shaft is a specialist job that typically involves dismantling and resetting the steering box, then adjusting the mesh and preload to the workshop manual specification. It's not usually a roadside or beginner task.
