Starter Motor Drive Assembly is the pinion drive of the starter motor, used on V8 petrol engines fitted with the Bosch starter.

When the starter is energised, the drive assembly is thrown forward so its pinion engages the flywheel ring gear and cranks the engine. Its one-way overrunning clutch then lets the pinion spin freely once the engine fires, protecting the starter from overspeed before the pinion withdraws.

A worn drive assembly causes the starter to spin without cranking, grind against the ring gear, or fail to disengage.
