Starter Solenoid for the engine cranking circuit, mounted on the starter motor body.

When energised by the ignition switch it throws the starter pinion into mesh with the flywheel ring gear and, at the end of its travel, closes the high-current main contacts that feed battery power to the starter motor. It therefore acts as both the engagement actuator and the heavy-duty switch for the starting system. Used on V8 petrol applications.
