Carbon Canister - activated-charcoal vapour canister in the evaporative emission control (EVAP) system.

The canister sits between the fuel tank vent line and the engine intake. Fuel vapour rising in the tank is routed into the canister and adsorbed onto the activated charcoal rather than escaping to atmosphere. When running conditions allow, the purge valve opens and intake vacuum draws fresh air through the canister, stripping the stored vapour off the charcoal and feeding it into the engine to be burned.

A saturated, contaminated or cracked canister typically shows as a fuel smell around the vehicle, rough running shortly after a purge event, or a stored EVAP system fault code.
