Front Drive Shaft - front axle drive assembly.

Carries drive from the front differential output to the wheel hub. A plunging joint at the differential end lets the shaft change effective length as the suspension moves, while a fixed constant velocity joint at the hub end keeps drive smooth through full steering lock.

Worn joints usually announce themselves as a rhythmic click or knock on full lock under power. A split gaiter that has thrown its grease is the normal cause, so a shaft is often replaced because a boot was left torn.

Frequently asked questions

What does the front drive shaft do on a Freelander 1?
The front drive shaft carries drive from the front differential output to the wheel hub on the Land Rover Freelander 1 (1996-2006). A plunging joint at the differential end lets the shaft change length as the suspension moves. GKN OEM, Land Rover number TDB00036.
Which engines and build does this front drive shaft fit?
This front drive shaft fits the Freelander 1 with the 2.5 KV6 petrol or M47 2.0L diesel engine, from VIN 1A000001 onwards. Confirm your engine and VIN before ordering, as earlier build shafts differ.
What are the signs a Freelander 1 front drive shaft needs replacing?
Clicking on full lock, vibration under acceleration, or grease thrown around the inner joint typically point to a worn front drive shaft. A split CV boot that lets the joint run dry usually causes the wear, and left unchecked the joint can fail and cut drive to that wheel.
