What does this water pump do?

The water pump circulates coolant through the engine block, cylinder head and radiator so heat is carried away instead of building up. It's usually belt driven from the engine, and on the Defender it's a service item rather than a lifetime part.

How do I know the water pump has failed?

Typical signs are coolant weeping from the pump's weep hole, a whine or rumble that changes with engine speed, play in the pulley, or repeated coolant loss with no other leak. A failing pump can overheat the engine, so it's worth checking early.

What should I replace at the same time?

Fit a new gasket or seal with the pump, and renew the drive belt and tensioner if they have done high mileage, since the pump is already exposed. Drain and refill with fresh coolant rather than reusing the old fluid, then bleed the system.
