Propshaft Gaiter (Sliding Joint) is the flexible rubber boot that seals the sliding splined joint of the propshaft in the drivetrain.

The sliding joint allows the propshaft to change length as the axle moves through its suspension travel. The gaiter encloses the splines, retaining their lubricating grease and excluding road dirt and water.

A perished or split gaiter lets grease escape and allows contamination to reach the splines, leading to wear and driveline vibration.

Frequently asked questions

What does the propshaft sliding joint gaiter do?
The propshaft sliding joint gaiter is the rubber boot that seals the sliding splined joint on the propshaft. It retains the grease that lubricates the splines and keeps road dirt and water out, so the joint can extend and contract as the axle moves through its suspension travel.
Which Land Rovers does this propshaft gaiter fit?
This gaiter fits the Land Rover Defender 1987-2006, Discovery 2 1998-2004 and Range Rover P38 1994-2001 on both front and rear propshafts. On the Discovery 1 1989-1998 it's used on the rear propshaft only, so check which propshaft you're working on before ordering.
Why does a propshaft gaiter split or perish?
A propshaft gaiter typically perishes with age, heat and road salt, then splits at the folds. Once it splits, grease escapes and grit and water reach the splines, which leads to sliding joint wear and driveline vibration. Replacing the gaiter early keeps the joint sealed and greased.
How many gaiters do I need for a propshaft?
Typically one gaiter seals each propshaft sliding joint, so a single propshaft needs one. The Defender and Discovery 2 have both front and rear propshafts, so doing both joints usually means two gaiters. Confirm how many propshafts you're servicing before ordering.
