Aftermarket Part

Pinion Lock Nut – Salisbury secures the drive pinion in the Salisbury rear differential, retaining the pinion flange and holding the pinion bearing preload.

Threaded onto the pinion shaft behind the companion flange, it clamps the flange and bearing stack against the pinion head. Tightened to the correct torque, it sets and maintains the pinion bearing preload that controls pinion endfloat and crown-wheel-and-pinion mesh. The "Salisbury" designation identifies the heavy-duty axle type the nut is sized for.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Pinion Lock Nut for?
The Pinion Lock Nut secures the drive pinion in the Salisbury rear differential, clamping the pinion flange and bearing stack against the pinion head. Tightened to the workshop torque, it sets and holds the pinion bearing preload that controls pinion endfloat and crown-wheel-and-pinion mesh.
Which Land Rovers use the Salisbury pinion nut?
This pinion nut fits Land Rovers with the heavy-duty Salisbury rear axle: Series 2 and 3 109-inch, and Defender 110-inch and 130-inch built 1983 to 2006. It does not fit the Defender 90-inch, which uses a different rear axle. Confirm your axle type before ordering.
How do I tell if I have the Salisbury axle?
The Salisbury axle is the heavy-duty rear differential fitted to long-wheelbase Land Rovers, typically identified by its bulky cast centre with a removable front cover. This nut is sized for that axle. If your vehicle has the lighter Rover-type rear axle, you'll need a different pinion nut.
Should the pinion lock nut be reused?
Fit a new pinion lock nut rather than reusing the old one when the pinion flange is disturbed. The nut sets critical bearing preload, and a reused nut can lose clamping security. Setting pinion preload correctly is specialist work, so this is typically a job for an experienced mechanic.
