Frequently asked questions

What is the FRC3988 joint washer used for?
The FRC3988 joint washer seals the driving member, or drive flange, to the hub on the axle. It sits between the flange and the hub face to prevent oil weep and to seat the joint correctly when the drive member is bolted up during a hub or halfshaft repair.
Where on the vehicle is the joint washer fitted?
The joint washer fits at the axle drive member, where the driving flange bolts to the wheel hub. On Series 2, 2A and 3 it is used on both front and rear axles; on the Series 1 it is the rear axle driving member.
How many joint washers are needed for the job?
You typically need one joint washer per drive member, so one per hub being worked on. If you are doing both sides of an axle, order two. They are sold individually, so match the quantity to the number of flanges you remove.
Should the joint washer be replaced every time?
Replace the joint washer every time you remove the drive member. These gaskets are typically single-use, and a reused washer often weeps oil or fails to seat, so fit a fresh one whenever the flange is disturbed on a Series or Defender axle.
Does the FRC3988 fit all Defenders?
On the Defender this joint washer fits 1987-2006 models up to VIN KA930455 only, as later axles use a different driving member arrangement. It also fits Land Rover Series 1, 2, 2A and 3. Check your VIN if your Defender is near the 2006 cut-off.
