Hub Bearing - a tapered roller bearing for the front and rear axle wheel ends. It supports the rotating wheel hub on the stationary stub axle, carrying the radial and axial loads generated under cornering and braking while holding the hub in correct alignment for smooth rotation.

Supplied as a bearing assembly for fitting within the hub during a wheel-end rebuild; it is not pre-installed in a hub. The tapered roller arrangement is set to the specified end-float on assembly to establish correct running clearance and bearing life.

Frequently asked questions

What is the RTC3429 hub bearing used for?
The RTC3429 is a Timken OEM tapered roller bearing for front and rear axle hub assemblies. It fits Defender up to VIN KA930455, Series 3 (from October 1980), Discovery 1 (VINs FA393361–WA799999), and Range Rover Classic (1986–1994). For Defender from VIN LA930456 onward, a different hub bearing specification is required.
When should the RTC3429 hub bearing be replaced?
Replace this bearing when you notice wheel bearing rumble or growl at speed, excessive play when the wheel is rocked at the 3 and 9 o'clock positions, or visible contamination or heat discolouration on disassembly. Tapered roller hub bearings on solid-axle Land Rovers typically require adjustment checks and replacement during major hub rebuilds.
What are the equivalent part numbers for the RTC3429?
Cross-references include STC4382, BR 3141, Timken SET37-900SA (606334), and S.3097. The AllMakes and BritPart code is RTC3429G. Always confirm the bearing fits your specific VIN range — hub bearing specifications changed at VIN KA930455/LA930456 on the Defender.
