Differential Pinion Oil Seal for the axle differential housing.

This oil seal fits around the pinion flange where the propshaft coupling connects, sealing the pinion shaft where it exits the differential housing and preventing differential oil from leaking past the flange face. Replacement is typically required when the seal lips harden or wear, resulting in an oil leak at the pinion flange. The seal is accessible after removing the propshaft, releasing and extracting the drive flange, and pressing the worn seal from its housing bore.

Frequently asked questions

What is the FRC4586 pinion oil seal and where does it sit on the axle?
FRC4586 is a differential pinion oil seal that seals the pinion shaft where it exits the differential housing at the propshaft flange coupling. It's fitted to Series I, II, IIA, III differentials, Defender 90 up to axle number 22S08283B, and Range Rover Classic up to 1985.
What causes the differential pinion seal to fail and what happens if it's ignored?
Pinion oil seals typically fail as the rubber lip hardens and loses contact with the rotating flange. The main symptom is oil weeping around the propshaft coupling. Left unrepaired, differential oil level drops and eventually causes bearing and gear damage inside the differential.
Is FRC4586 suitable for all Defender models?
No. On the Defender, FRC4586 fits Defender 90 only, up to axle number 22S08283B. It doesn't fit the Defender 110 or 130. Cross-references include BR 0668, 217507, and FRC4785.
