Differential Pinion Oil Seal for the axle differential housing.

This oil seal fits around the pinion flange where the propshaft coupling connects, sealing the pinion shaft where it exits the differential housing and preventing differential oil from leaking past the flange face. Replacement is typically required when the seal lips harden or wear, resulting in an oil leak at the pinion flange. The seal is accessible after removing the propshaft, releasing and extracting the drive flange, and pressing the worn seal from its housing bore.

Frequently asked questions

What is the FRC4586G differential pinion oil seal used for?
The FRC4586G differential pinion oil seal fits around the pinion flange where the propshaft connects, sealing the pinion shaft where it exits the differential housing. It prevents differential oil leaking past the flange face on the axle.
Which Land Rover models does this pinion oil seal fit?
This pinion oil seal fits the Series I (1948 to 1958), Series II, IIA and III (1958 to 1985), Range Rover Classic (1970 to 1985), and the Defender 90 (1983 to 2006) up to axle 22S08283B. On the Defender it suits the 90 only, so confirm your axle number before ordering.
When does the differential pinion oil seal need replacing?
Replace the differential pinion oil seal when oil leaks at the pinion flange where the propshaft meets the differential. The seal lips typically harden or wear over time, causing a leak at the flange. Left unchanged, a dropping oil level can damage the differential.
How is the pinion oil seal replaced?
The pinion oil seal is reached after removing the propshaft, then releasing and extracting the drive flange so the worn seal can be pressed from its housing bore. It's typically a job for a competent mechanic, as the flange nut and pinion preload need careful handling on reassembly.
