What does the FRC4719 breather assembly do?

The FRC4719 is a breather for the rear axle on Defender models (1987-2006). It equalises air pressure inside the axle housing as the axle heats and cools, which stops pressure building up and pushing oil past the axle seals.

Where is the rear axle breather located?

It's fitted to the top of the rear axle casing on the Defender, with a small hose or pipe typically routed up away from water and mud so air can vent freely without letting moisture in.

Why does the axle breather matter, and what happens if it fails or gets blocked?

A blocked or damaged breather stops pressure escaping the axle housing, and the trapped pressure typically pushes gear oil past the pinion or hub seals. This often shows up as oil leaks around the axle despite the seals themselves being in good condition.
