View full detailsFitment centres on the traditional swivel-ball live-axle range: Series, the classic Defender, Discovery 1 and Range Rover Classic. The later Discovery 2 and Range Rover P38 use ball-jointed hubs rather than a swivel ball, so only their axle-shaft parts appear here. Confirm the axle type and build before ordering. Budget Parts has supplied Land Rover parts for more than 25 years, with stock across our Dutch warehouse network for fast EU dispatch.
On the traditional swivel-ball Land Rover axle the front swivel is where steering and drive meet. The chrome swivel ball or swivel housing encloses the front half-shaft joint, seals the axle oil or grease in, and carries the stub axle and hub. Inside it, upper and lower swivel pivots let the assembly turn for steering, with the preload set by shims under the top pin. The bearing arrangement varies by axle and build: earlier classic axles use an upper Railko bush and a lower taper roller bearing, while later ABS axles use taper roller bearings top and bottom. When the swivel seal splits or the chrome ball corrodes and pits, oil or grease weeps out, the joint runs dry and steering feel suffers, which is why a swivel overhaul is one of the classic Land Rover service jobs. This collection sits within the wider Land Rover axle, suspension and steering system.
It brings together the swivel and axle-shaft range for Series, Defender, Discovery and Range Rover live-axle models. The front constant-velocity joints and drive shafts, the prop shafts, and the differential crown wheel, pinion and bearings are not here, since they belong with the driveline; see Driveshaft and Propshaft Parts for those. Wheel bearings, hub assemblies and hub oil seals are grouped separately in Wheel Bearings and Seals.
Buying GuideDecide first whether you are servicing or rebuilding a traditional swivel-ball axle. A swivel seal kit renews the outer seal to stop a weep, and a protective gaiter can be added as a popular aftermarket upgrade to shield the chrome ball from pitting, while a full swivel overhaul kit adds the swivel ball or housing, the bearings or bushes, pins, shims and gaskets, and often the one-shot grease, for when the chrome ball is pitted or the joint has run dry. Kit contents vary by axle and supplier, so check the listing rather than assuming. Identify whether the axle is oil-filled or one-shot grease before topping up, and confirm whether the vehicle has ABS, because ABS and non-ABS swivel and stub-axle parts are not always the same.
For the axle shafts, match the part to the axle. Rover-type and Salisbury rear axles use different half shafts and drive flanges, and shaft spline counts vary across the range, so work from the axle and build rather than the model name alone. Heavy-duty drive flanges and shafts are available where standard parts have failed under load or off-road use.
Genuine, OEM and aftermarket. Genuine swivel and axle parts carry the Land Rover part number. OEM or OES parts come from original-equipment manufacturers or recognised OE suppliers, and brands such as Allmakes OE, Corteco for seals and Timken for bearings may appear as OE, OES or aftermarket depending on the specific item. Aftermarket also covers value ranges and heavy-duty off-road brands such as Terrafirma for drive flanges and rebuild parts. For a standard overhaul an OEM or OES kit is the sensible balance; choose a heavy-duty part where load or off-road use has already broken a standard one.
FitmentThe table groups the live-axle models this collection serves. Confirm the axle type, ABS or non-ABS, and build by VIN before ordering, since swivel and shaft parts changed through production.
| Model group | Front axle type | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Series 1, 2, 2A, 3 | Traditional swivel-ball live axle with an enclosed front half-shaft joint | Oil-filled swivels. Tracta joint on early Series 1 (1948 to 1953), enclosed universal joint on later Series. Free-wheeling hubs common |
| Land Rover 90, 110, 130 and Defender (1983 to 2016) | Traditional swivel-ball live axle, constant-velocity joint enclosed | Earlier axles oil-filled, later axles one-shot grease. ABS on later models changes pin, bearing and joint parts |
| Discovery 1 (1989 to 1998) | Traditional swivel-ball live axle | Oil-filled early, one-shot grease later. Rover-type rear axle; confirm parts by build |
| Discovery 2 (1998 to 2004) | Beam front axle, open-knuckle hub on upper and lower ball joints (not a swivel ball) | Axle-shaft, stub-axle and hub parts here; the steering pivot ball joints are in Ball Joints. ABS standard, confirm by VIN |
| Range Rover Classic (1970 to 1996) | Traditional swivel-ball live axle | Oil-filled early, one-shot grease on late models |
| Range Rover P38 (1994 to 2001) | Beam front axle, open-knuckle hub on upper and lower ball joints (not a swivel ball) | Axle-shaft, stub-axle and hub parts here; the steering pivot ball joints are in Ball Joints. Confirm by VIN |
Independent-suspension models such as the Range Rover L322 onwards, Discovery 3 and later, Freelander and the New Defender L663 do not use a swivel-ball front axle. The Discovery 2 and Range Rover P38, although they have beam front axles, locate the hub on upper and lower ball joints rather than a swivel ball, so their steering pivots are served by Ball Joints and only their axle-shaft and hub parts appear here.
Work from the build date and VIN, then confirm the axle itself. Rover-type and Salisbury rear axles take different half shafts, drive flanges and stub-axle parts, and the front swivel changed from oil-filled to one-shot grease during production, so the same model can need different parts by build. Confirm whether the vehicle has ABS, since the reluctor-carrying stub axles and some swivel kits differ. Note the spline count on a half shaft or drive member before ordering a replacement, and check whether your swivel is being serviced or fully rebuilt so you order either a seal kit or a complete overhaul kit.

Land Rover shock absorbers and dampersOn Series, Defender, Discovery 1 and Range Rover Classic models with the traditional chromed swivel-ball axle, the usual signs are oil or grease weeping from the front swivel and staining the inside of the wheel, stiff or notchy steering, and a wandering feel on the road. Opening the housing shows the cause: a split seal, a corroded or pitted chrome swivel ball, or a worn swivel bearing. A seal kit cures a simple weep on a sound ball, while a pitted ball or a dry, worn bearing calls for a full swivel overhaul kit. The Discovery 2 and Range Rover P38 use ball-jointed hubs instead, so their play shows up at the ball joints.
Swivel overhaul kit contents vary by axle and supplier. A kit may include the swivel bearings or bushes, the pins, the seals and gaskets, the shims used to set the pivot preload, and on later axles the one-shot grease. Some complete kits also include the chromed swivel ball or housing, while others need it bought separately, so check the individual listing rather than assuming. A lighter seal kit is available where only the outer seal has failed. This applies to the traditional swivel-ball axles; Discovery 2 and P38 hubs are serviced through their ball joints instead.
On the traditional swivel-ball axles it depends on the build. Earlier housings are oil-filled to the plug level with the specified axle oil, while later housings use a semi-fluid one-shot swivel grease, and one-shot grease is also used as an approved service conversion on some earlier housings. Identify the axle and its existing fill before topping up, and drain, inspect and refill to the workshop procedure or kit instructions rather than adding to an unknown or contaminated fill.
The stub axle is the fixed spindle the wheel hub and bearings run on. The half shaft, or axle shaft, is the rotating shaft inside the axle tube that carries drive from the differential to the hub. The drive flange or drive member connects that shaft to the hub. On some Series vehicles a free-wheeling hub can replace the fixed drive member so the front hub can be disconnected from the half shaft. Rover-type and Salisbury axles use different half shafts and flanges, so confirm the axle before ordering.
No. The front constant-velocity joints and drive shafts, the prop shafts, and the differential crown wheel, pinion and bearings are driveline parts and are grouped with the Driveshaft and Propshaft and drive mechanism ranges, not here. This collection covers the swivel assembly that surrounds the joint, the stub axle, the axle half shafts and the drive flanges. A worn CV joint that clicks on full lock is ordered from the driveline range.
