Vacuum pump components belong here because a failing vacuum pump directly affects brake pedal feel and stopping distance. On diesel Land Rovers, loss of vacuum assistance produces a hard, stiff pedal and significantly reduced stopping performance. It is a brake safety item, not an engine accessory.
Buying GuideSeries drum brake kits cover Series 1, 2, 2A and 3 vehicles with hydraulic drum brake systems. Each kit is an axle-level set for one end of the vehicle. Selection depends on wheelbase (SWB or LWB), axle position (front or rear), model generation and build date. For Series III 88-inch vehicles, July 1980 is a key split, with different front and rear kit specifications before and after that point due to revised wheel cylinder sizing and shoe dimensions. LWB 109-inch, earlier Series I and II, 1-ton and other variants have separate specifications. Always check the product fitment notes against your build date plate before ordering.

Big brake upgrade kits are primarily for Discovery 3, Discovery 4 and Range Rover Sport L320 (2005 to 2013) owners seeking improved stopping performance beyond the standard OEM specification. The Terrafirma TF-series kits replace the standard disc and caliper setup with 340mm or 360mm rotors and uprated calipers, and are confirmed for Discovery 3, Discovery 4 and Range Rover Sport L320 applications listed on the individual product page. They are suited to vehicles used for towing, sustained off-road driving or track use where repeated heavy braking generates heat that standard discs struggle to manage. Fitment for Range Rover Sport L494 and later models must be confirmed against the individual product page before ordering.
The Terrafirma TF686 high-performance brake upgrade kit covers Defender 110 and 130 applications (1983 to 2016, with or without ABS) and is the flagship kit at the performance end of the range.
A note on quality tiers: the Terrafirma kits are performance-aftermarket products, not Genuine Land Rover replacements. On standard vacuum pump and drum brake kit items, Genuine Land Rover parts are supplied through the official JLR parts channel and carry official Land Rover part numbering and packaging. Newer numbers often use LR prefixes, while older Series, Defender, Range Rover Classic and early Discovery parts may use prefixes such as STC, RTC, NRC, AEU or similar. OEM alternatives are made to the same specification by the original component supplier and are typically priced lower with equivalent performance on safety-critical brake system components. Aftermarket options offer a further cost reduction and are suitable for regular road use. For a safety-critical item such as a vacuum pump, either Genuine or OEM is the recommended choice.
Vacuum pump components cover the brake servo pump on diesel Land Rovers. Many Land Rover diesel engines, including 200Tdi, 300Tdi, Td5, TDV6 and Puma TDCi applications, rely on a dedicated engine-driven vacuum pump to supply the brake servo. The pump design and service parts vary by engine code and are not interchangeable across engine families. Over time, the pump seal, rotor blade or gasket degrades rather than the pump body itself. In many cases, a seal or blade replacement resolves performance issues at a fraction of full pump replacement cost. Complete vacuum pump assemblies are also listed for cases where the pump body is damaged or seized.

Series drum brake kits: the critical fitment variable is build date. The July 1980 cut-off is stamped on the vehicle chassis plate, which sits on the A-post or near the bulkhead depending on market variant (LHD or RHD). SWB refers to 88-inch Series applications unless the product page states otherwise. LWB refers to 109-inch applications. Front and rear kits contain different components and are not interchangeable between axle positions.
Big brake upgrade kits: confirm the exact generation before ordering. Discovery 3 and Discovery 4 both carry the L319 platform designation but are distinct generations with different caliper and disc specifications. Range Rover Sport L320 (IBF platform, 2005 to 2013) and Range Rover Sport L494 (D7u platform, 2014 to 2022) require separate kit specifications. Check the product fitment notes against your model year before adding to cart.
Vacuum pump components: specification varies by engine code, not model year alone. Defender and Discovery engines from the 200Tdi through to the 2.7 TDV6 (276DT) and 3.0 TDV6 (306DT) each use a specific pump body and seal set. Match by engine code. The VIN is the most reliable way to confirm model year, build specification and engine code for vacuum pump fitment. For post-1996 Land Rovers, the 10th VIN character identifies model year. For vacuum pump parts, match by engine code rather than model year alone, and use the VIN or product fitment notes to confirm compatibility. On LHD and RHD variants, pump mounting orientation can differ on some engine-mounted applications; check the product installation notes.
Fitting NotesSeries drum brake kits: Replace shoes and wheel cylinders as an axle pair; mixing worn and new components on the same axle causes uneven braking. Bleed the hydraulic circuit after fitting. Do not reuse old return springs; the spring sets are included in these kits because spring fatigue is as significant as shoe wear on high-mileage Series vehicles.
Big brake upgrade kits (Terrafirma): On Discovery 3, Discovery 4 and Range Rover Sport L320, the Electronic Parking Brake uses drum-in-hat parking brake shoes mounted inside the rear disc hat, not an actuator built into the hydraulic caliper. When fitting a big brake kit to the rear axle, the rear disc must be removed, which requires the drum-in-hat shoes to be retracted first. Place the EPB into service mode using a diagnostic tool before removing rear discs, and isolate the EPB circuit before carrying out any parking brake shoe or cable work.
On Discovery 3, Discovery 4 and Range Rover Sport L320, EPB service mode is required before removing rear discs. The EPB uses drum-in-hat shoes inside the disc hat. Retract the shoes via service mode before disc removal to avoid damage. This applies to all rear disc work, including big brake kit installation.
Vacuum pump seals and rotor blades: When fitting a replacement seal, clean the mating face on the pump body thoroughly before installation. On pumps using an O-ring type seal, apply a thin film of clean engine oil to the seal before fitting; a dry seal compressed under torque can deform and cause an immediate oil leak. Rotor blades should be inspected for groove wear on the pump body interior before assuming a blade replacement alone resolves the fault. If the pump body shows internal scoring, a full unit replacement is the correct fix.

In some cases a hissing noise is audible from the servo area under braking.
