Oil Pressure Switch - tapered thread, engine lubrication circuit.

Screws into the oil gallery - at the pump, the filter housing or the oil cooler depending on application - and monitors gallery pressure. The contacts close at low pressure to earth the warning lamp circuit and open once the pump lifts pressure past the switching threshold, so the lamp illuminates with the ignition and extinguishes shortly after the engine fires. A failed switch shows as a lamp that stays lit despite healthy oil pressure, or one that never illuminates at all.

This is the tapered-thread version: it seals on the thread form itself rather than against a separate washer, so a thread sealant suitable for oil galleries is used on fitting and the switch is tightened to the specified torque - overtightening a tapered thread is what splits an alloy housing.

A weeping switch drips oil down the side of the block, so it is worth ruling out before condemning a gasket.

Frequently asked questions

What does the NUC10003 oil pressure switch do?
The NUC10003 oil pressure switch monitors engine oil gallery pressure. Its contacts close at low pressure to light the warning lamp and open once the pump lifts pressure past the threshold, so the lamp shows with the ignition and goes out shortly after the engine fires.
Where does this tapered-thread switch screw in?
It screws into the oil gallery, at the oil pump, filter housing or oil cooler depending on the application. This is the tapered-thread version, which seals on the thread form itself rather than a separate washer, so a suitable thread sealant is used on fitting.
Which engines does NUC10003 fit?
It fits the Td5 Defender and Discovery 2, the Discovery 1 2.0 MPi T Series petrol, and the Freelander 1 K Series petrol and Rover diesel. The mounting point varies by engine, so match the switch to your engine's gallery location.
What are the signs this switch has failed?
A failed oil pressure switch typically shows as a warning lamp that stays lit despite healthy oil pressure, or one that never lights at all. A weeping switch also drips oil down the block, so it's worth ruling out before condemning a gasket.
