View full details1997 to 2006. K-series, KV6, L-series, and TD4 (BMW M47R) engines.
Freelander 1 parts →2006 to 2014. eD4, TD4, and SD4 diesel variants plus 3.2 petrol.
Freelander 2 parts →The Land Rover Freelander ran across two distinct generations and was discontinued in 2014. Each generation uses different platforms, engines, and drivetrains. Parts are not interchangeable between them, and fitment must be confirmed by generation, model year, and engine type before ordering.
The Freelander 1 (L314) was produced from 1997 to 2006 in 3-door and 5-door body styles. Engine options included the 1.8-litre Rover K-series petrol, the 2.5-litre KV6 V6 petrol, the early 2.0-litre Rover L-series diesel (1997 to 2000), and the 2.0-litre BMW M47R TD4 diesel (2001 to 2006). It used a monocoque structure with a viscous coupling unit and intermediate reduction drive, with no low-range transfer case. The Freelander 1 sold over 540,000 units across Europe during its nine-year production run, making it the best-selling four-wheel drive vehicle in Europe for five consecutive years after its 1997 launch.
The Freelander 2 (L359) was produced from 2006 to 2014 as a 5-door estate only. It is based on the Ford EUCD platform and shares its architecture with the Volvo XC60. Diesel engines used the 2.2-litre PSA DW12 unit in three states of tune: eD4 (150 hp, front-wheel drive from 2011), TD4 (160 hp), and SD4 (190 hp). Petrol options included the 3.2-litre Volvo B6324S5 inline six and, in later markets, a 2.0-litre Ford EcoBoost petrol. Four-wheel drive models use an active Haldex coupling system. Production ended in October 2014. The Freelander 2 was succeeded by the Discovery Sport.
Vehicle IdentificationIf you are unsure which generation you own, the quickest method is to check the vehicle's production year. Vehicles produced up to and including 2006 are Freelander 1 (L314). Vehicles produced from late 2006 onward are Freelander 2 (L359). The VIN plate is located on the door sill or the engine bay identification plate, depending on market variant, and confirms the build date and chassis designation.
For engine confirmation, the TD4 badge appears on both generations but refers to different engines. On Freelander 1 vehicles produced from 2001, the TD4 is a 2.0-litre BMW M47R unit. On Freelander 2 vehicles, the TD4 is a 2.2-litre PSA DW12 unit. These engines use different parts throughout and must not be confused.
Land Rover's official VIN model year guide can help you confirm your vehicle's model year from its VIN: Land Rover VIN model year guide.
Quality TiersBudget Parts stocks three quality tiers for Freelander components, visible in the collection filter.
Genuine parts are produced by Land Rover or JLR and carry the OEM part number alongside the Land Rover branding. They are the most accurate match to the original specification. Genuine Land Rover parts are listed across both Freelander generations where available.
OEM parts are manufactured by the same original equipment suppliers that produce components for Land Rover's assembly line, but sold without Land Rover branding. These are technically equivalent to Genuine parts for most applications and are the preferred choice for workshops sourcing at trade cost.
Aftermarket parts are produced by independent manufacturers to meet or exceed OEM specification. Quality varies by manufacturer. Budget Parts selects aftermarket lines that meet the functional requirements of the original part and are appropriate for use on Freelander 1 and Freelander 2 vehicles.
For critical drivetrain, braking, and suspension components, OEM or Genuine parts are recommended. Aftermarket parts are well-suited to consumables, service items, trim components, and fasteners.
Trade BuyersThe Freelander is a common vehicle in independent workshops across the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany. Budget Parts supplies trade buyers and garages across the EU. If you service Freelanders regularly and require volume pricing or VAT-correct invoicing for business purchases, the wholesale portal is available via the header of this site.
Technical GuidesThese articles provide deeper technical context for Freelander owners and workshop technicians. They support diagnosis and part selection and link directly to the relevant generation parts collections.
A technical reference covering driveline, transmission, body, suspension, steering, and software issues across the Freelander 2 (L359) range. Useful for identifying which components are involved before ordering replacement parts.
Freelander 2 faults and fixes guide →A maintenance-focused guide covering the most common wear items on the Freelander 1 (L314), including driveshaft assemblies, engine gaskets, and cooling components. Relevant for owners keeping older L314 vehicles in service.
Freelander 1 maintenance guide →Covers driveline fault diagnosis across multiple Land Rover models including the Freelander 2. Relevant to the VCU and IRD system on Freelander 1 vehicles and the Haldex coupling drivetrain on Freelander 2 models.
Land Rover driveshaft and driveline diagnosis →Driveshafts, propshafts, universal joints, and related driveline components for both Freelander generations.
Driveshaft and propshaft parts →Cooling system components including water pumps, thermostats, and hoses. K-series and TD4 cooling parts are common service items on the L314.
Land Rover cooling parts →Engine components for K-series, KV6, L-series, M47R, DW12, and B6324S5 power units across both Freelander generations.
Land Rover engine parts →Brake discs, pads, callipers, and hydraulic components. Use the collection filter to narrow to your Freelander generation.
Land Rover brake parts →Shock absorbers, springs, bushings, and arms. Freelander 1 and Freelander 2 use different suspension architectures, so confirm generation before ordering.
Land Rover suspension parts →Combined service kits and consumables for routine Freelander maintenance. Listed under service kits when available for your engine variant.
Land Rover service kits →No. The Freelander 1 (L314, 1997 to 2006) and Freelander 2 (L359, 2006 to 2014) use different platforms, engines, drivetrains, and electrical architectures. A Freelander 1 TD4 uses a 2.0-litre BMW M47R engine. A Freelander 2 TD4 uses a 2.2-litre PSA DW12 engine. Parts designed for one generation will not fit the other. Always confirm your generation, model year, and engine type before ordering.
The most reliable check is the production year. Freelander 1 (L314) vehicles were produced from October 1997 to 2006 and were sold in 3-door and 5-door body styles. Note that vehicles produced in late 1997 typically carry a 1998 model year designation. Freelander 2 (L359) vehicles were produced from late 2006 to October 2014 as 5-door estates only. If your vehicle was registered in late 2006 or early 2007, check the build date on the VIN plate, located on the door sill or in the engine bay. The chassis code L314 confirms a Freelander 1. The chassis code L359 confirms a Freelander 2.
Genuine parts carry Land Rover branding and are produced to OEM specification by JLR-approved suppliers. OEM parts are manufactured by the same original equipment suppliers but sold without Land Rover branding, making them a cost-effective equivalent for most applications. Aftermarket parts are produced by independent manufacturers and vary in quality. For braking, drivetrain, and suspension components, OEM or Genuine parts are recommended. For service items, consumables, and trim, quality aftermarket parts are a practical choice.
Yes. Budget Parts is based in The Hague and holds Freelander parts in EU stock. Orders are fulfilled for customers and workshops across the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, France, and other EU member states. Fitment support and VIN-based part confirmation are available for both Freelander generations.
The Freelander 2 was discontinued in October 2014 and replaced by the Discovery Sport in 2015. The Freelander name was not used on any Land Rover vehicle after that date. A separate Freelander-branded electric vehicle is being developed under a JLR and Chery joint venture for the Chinese market, but this is an entirely different product with no parts commonality with the L314 or L359. Budget Parts supplies parts for the original Freelander 1 (L314) and Freelander 2 (L359) only.
