Oxygen (Lambda) Sensor for the rear, post-catalyst position in the exhaust system.

Mounted in the downpipe downstream of the catalytic converter, this sensor monitors the oxygen content of the gas leaving the catalyst. The engine management ECU compares its signal against the pre-catalyst sensor to assess catalyst conversion efficiency and to apply long-term trim correction to closed-loop fuelling. Unlike the pre-catalyst sensor it does not control fuelling directly, so a failed unit generally presents as a catalyst efficiency or sensor circuit fault code rather than as a driveability complaint.

Apply anti-seize compound to the sensor thread only when fitting, and keep the sensor tip free of grease and other contamination.

Frequently asked questions

What is the MHK100930 rear oxygen sensor for?
The MHK100930 is the rear (after-catalyst) oxygen sensor that monitors exhaust gas downstream of the catalytic converter. It reports to the ECU to confirm the catalyst is working, and is fitted to petrol Discovery 2, Range Rover P38, and certain Freelander 1 models.
Where does the rear oxygen sensor sit?
This sensor mounts in the downpipe after the catalytic converter, which is why it's called the rear or post-cat sensor. On the Discovery 2 4.0 V8 and Range Rover P38 it reads exhaust gas leaving the cat so the ECU can check converter efficiency.
Does the MHK100930 fit my Freelander or P38?
The MHK100930 fits the Discovery 2 1998-2004 (4.0 V8), Range Rover P38 1994-2001 (4.0/4.6 V8, from VIN XA onwards), and Freelander 1 2.5 KV6 petrol for CDN/MEX/USA from VIN 2A000001. The Freelander and P38 fitment depends on VIN, so check yours.
What are the signs a rear oxygen sensor has failed?
A failed rear oxygen sensor typically triggers the engine warning light and a catalyst-related fault code on the Discovery 2 or Range Rover P38. It can also cause poor fuel economy. Since it monitors the exhaust, replace it once it's confirmed faulty to clear the fault.
