Check three things: front or rear axle position, whether the vehicle runs coil springs or air suspension, and the mounting type at each end (eye, stud or fork). Fitting Common Fitting Notes
- Replace dampers in axle pairs. Fit both fronts or both rears together so damping stays balanced side to side.
- Renew the top mounts, bushes and washers with the shock on higher-mileage vehicles. Perished rubber lets the new damper knock and wear early.
- Torque bushed fixings at normal ride height, not on full droop, so the bush is not pre-loaded and does not fail prematurely.
- Gas-charged dampers are pressurised and extend on their own. Do not clamp the body in a vice or the tube can distort.
