A shock absorber (damper) turns suspension movement into heat, damping the bounce of the spring so the wheel follows the ground instead of skipping over it. On a Land Rover that job is harder than on a road car: heavy axles, tall springs and off-road articulation all put more work through the damper. Worn units show up as body roll, nose dive under braking, a floating ride and uneven tyre wear. Because the damper works as part of the wider Land Rover axle, suspension and steering system, it is worth checking the mounts, bushes and springs at the same time.

OEM or OES units are supplied by the original-equipment manufacturers or recognised OE suppliers, such as BWI, Bilstein, Monroe or Girling, and are built to match the original fit, quality and performance without the genuine-box premium. Match the part to your specific vehicle before ordering. Work from the build date and VIN rather than the model year alone, because suspension changes often fall mid-year. The VIN plate is on the chassis or under the bonnet depending on model; a VIN or chassis-number search returns the exact suspension build, engine and any self-levelling or air-suspension option fitted. Check three things: front or rear axle position, whether the vehicle runs coil springs or air suspension, and the mounting type at each end (eye, stud or fork). Where a listing gives a chassis-number range, use it: several generations changed damper spec partway through production.
FittingShock absorbers are a safety-critical part. Fit them as a pair per axle and torque all fixings to the correct figure for your model. If in doubt on a lifted or converted vehicle, confirm the damper length against your spring setup before fitting.

Yes. Replace both fronts or both rears together so damping stays balanced from side to side. A new shock next to a worn one causes uneven handling and faster wear. As a guide, dampers are worth inspecting around every 50,000 km or whenever the ride quality changes.
The common signs are excessive body roll, nose dive under braking, a floating or bouncing ride over bumps, uneven or cupped tyre wear, and knocking from the top mount. Any of these on a Land Rover means the dampers are due for inspection.
Front and rear dampers differ in length, rating and mounting type, whether that is an eye, a stud or a fork. Match by axle position and by the vehicle build date rather than by appearance alone, because several models changed spec partway through production.
