Threads into the coolant passage at the inlet manifold and reports coolant temperature to the engine control unit, which uses the signal to enrich fuelling during warm-up and to correct the mixture once the engine reaches operating temperature.

A failed or drifting transducer typically shows up as poor cold starting, uneven idle and raised fuel consumption.

The PRC7918A is a coolant temperature transducer for the 3.9 V8 EFI petrol engine in the Range Rover Classic. It reads coolant temperature and feeds that signal into the engine management system, which uses it to set fuelling while the engine warms up.
Where is the sensor located on the 3.9 V8?
On the inlet manifold. On 1986 to 1991 Range Rover Classic vehicles it sits on the inlet manifold external pipes, and on 1992 to 1994 vehicles it's on the inlet manifold itself. Both positions are on top of the engine and reachable without removing anything major.
What happens when a coolant temperature sensor fails?
A failed sensor typically sends a wrong temperature signal, so the engine management fuels as though the engine is cold. That usually shows as poor cold starting, rough running, heavy fuel consumption or a cooling fan that behaves oddly. Symptoms often come and go before the sensor fails completely.
Is this the same as the temperature gauge sender?
