It was the first Range Rover Sport to use the JLR D7u aluminium-intensive platform, a structure shared with the full-size Range Rover L405. The shift to aluminium reduced unladen weight significantly compared to the T5-based L320 and reshaped the parts and service profile of the vehicle.

All L494 variants use the ZF 8HP 8-speed automatic transmission as standard. Gearbox service and mechatronic parts may be found in the engine and drivetrain categories.
