What is the ZF automatic gearbox sump gasket for?
The gearbox sump gasket seals the joint between the transmission oil pan and the gearbox casing on the ZF 4-speed automatic. It keeps the automatic transmission fluid sealed in and stops dirt getting into the gearbox.
When should this sump gasket be replaced?
Replace the sump gasket whenever the transmission oil pan is removed, typically during an ATF and filter service. The gasket is typically single-use, so a fresh one goes on every time the pan comes off.
Which Land Rovers use this gasket?
It fits the ZF 4-speed automatic gearbox in the Defender 1987-2006, Discovery 1, Discovery 2, Range Rover Classic and Range Rover P38. All these share the same ZF automatic sump sealing gasket.
Can the old sump gasket be reused?
No, the ZF sump gasket shouldn't be reused. Once compressed and removed it hardens and won't reseal, which usually leads to transmission fluid weeping from the pan flange. Fit a new gasket each time you refit the sump.
