What is this gearbox stud used for?
This is a 1 3/4-inch threaded stud used in the gearbox and transfer box assembly. It gives a fixed threaded anchor for clamping casing joints and mating components together, with a nut torqued down over the projecting thread to hold the assembly.
Should a gearbox stud be reused or replaced?
Replace the stud when the thread is damaged, corroded, or the stud has stretched. A stud with a stripped or stretched thread won't clamp the casing reliably, so fitting a sound 1 3/4-inch stud is worth it whenever you find one past its best during gearbox work.
