Frequently asked questions

What does the differential bearing do on a Salisbury axle?
The differential bearing is one of a pair of taper roller bearings that carry the differential carrier, the housing holding the crown wheel and diff gears, inside the Salisbury axle casing. The pair locates the crown wheel against the pinion and sets the crown-wheel-to-pinion backlash.
How many differential bearings do I need?
Two carrier bearings support the differential in the Salisbury axle, one each side. They're typically renewed as a matched pair during a differential overhaul, since replacing only one usually upsets the preload and backlash the pair is set to.
Which Land Rovers use this Salisbury differential bearing?
This fits the 4-pin Salisbury rear axle on the Land Rover Defender 110 and 130 from 1986 to 2006, the Defender 90 rear differential from 1995, and Series 3 109 inch models. Confirm your axle type by chassis number before ordering.
What are the signs a differential bearing is worn?
A worn carrier bearing lets the differential shift under load, producing axle whine and changed backlash between the crown wheel and pinion. Left unrenewed the movement typically accelerates wear on the crown wheel and pinion, so both bearings are replaced during an overhaul.
