What is the Propshaft UJ Circlip and what does it do?
The propshaft UJ circlip is a retaining clip that seats in the groove of the yoke ear and holds the bearing cap of the universal joint cross in place. It sets the endwise location of the bearing so it can't work out under drive torque. Fitted at both front and rear joints.
How many UJ circlips are needed to rebuild a propshaft joint?
You typically need four circlips per universal joint, one for each bearing cap of the cross. A propshaft has a joint at each end, so a full rebuild of both usually takes eight. Always renew them with the joint rather than reusing old clips.
Which Land Rovers does this propshaft circlip fit?
It fits Series 1, 2, 2A and 3, Defender up to 2016, Discovery 1 and 2, and Range Rover Classic and P38 from 1994 to 2001. It's used on the front and rear propshaft universal joints across these models.
Should the propshaft circlips be reused when servicing a UJ?
No, renew the circlips whenever you rebuild a universal joint. They're cheap, and a clip that's been removed can lose its grip in the groove, letting the bearing cap creep out under load. Always fit fresh clips with a new UJ.
