Frequently asked questions

What is the RTC5964G universal joint and what does it do?
The RTC5964G is a 75mm universal joint for the axle half shaft. It lets the half shaft transmit drive to the wheel while accommodating articulation as the suspension and steering move. It's a GKN joint fitted to the non-V8 axle on classic Defender and Series II/III models.
Why does the half shaft universal joint fail, and what are the signs?
A worn universal joint typically shows up as a clunk or knock when taking up drive, vibration, or backlash in the driveline. The needle bearings wear and the joint develops play. Left unchecked it can seize. Renewing it restores smooth, backlash-free drive through the half shaft.
How many universal joints do I need?
You'll typically need one RTC5964G per half shaft, though many owners replace both sides together since they wear at a similar rate. Confirm you need the 75mm non-V8 joint rather than the larger V8-axle type before ordering.
