Frequently asked questions

What does a core plug do in a Land Rover engine?
A core plug seals a casting aperture in the cylinder block or head of the 2.25L and 2.5L four-cylinder petrol engines. Also called an expansion or freeze plug, it closes the holes left after the sand casting cores are removed and seals the surrounding coolant galleries.
How many core plugs are usually needed?
An engine typically has several core plugs spread along the block and cylinder head. If one has corroded through it's common practice to replace the others at the same time, since they're the same age, and to do the full set during an engine rebuild.
Why do core plugs fail on these engines?
Core plugs usually fail through internal corrosion, often when coolant has been left too long or run without enough inhibitor. A corroded plug starts to weep or blow out, causing coolant loss. Renew any plug that's weeping, and ideally the surrounding ones too.
Which Land Rovers use this core plug?
This core plug suits the Land Rover Defender and Series 2 and 3 fitted with the 2.25L or 2.5L four-cylinder petrol engine. Check which engine your vehicle has before ordering, as core plug sizes vary between different engine castings.
