Frequently asked questions

What is the 1 7/8" Core Plug used for?
The 1 7/8" Core Plug seals a casting core hole, such as those in the inlet manifold. It closes the opening left by the casting sand core and can push out to relieve pressure if trapped coolant freezes, protecting the casting. It fits Land Rover Defender and Series 2, 2A and 3.
Where does this 1 7/8" core plug fit?
On Land Rover Defender from 1986 to 2006 it fits the inlet manifold on the 2.5 naturally aspirated and 2.5 turbo diesel engines. On Series 2, 2A and 3 it suits all engines. The plug is 1 7/8" diameter, so confirm the bore size you need.
Why do core plugs need replacing?
Core plugs typically rust through from the coolant side and start to weep or seep, especially on older engines. Replace a core plug once it's corroded, leaking or pushed out. Leaving a failing plug risks coolant loss and overheating on the Defender or Series engine.
Is this the right core plug size for my engine?
This core plug is 1 7/8" diameter. Engines use several core plugs in different sizes, so measure the bore you're sealing and match it to 1 7/8" before ordering. They're sold individually, so order one per hole you need to seal.
