Frequently asked questions

What is the inlet valve guide and what does it do?
The inlet valve guide is pressed into the diesel cylinder head and locates the inlet valve stem, keeping the valve concentric with its seat through every cycle. It also carries heat from the valve stem into the head casting. It's part of the valve train on the 2.5 diesel and Series diesel engines.
How many valve guides are needed, and when are they replaced?
Valve guides are typically renewed as a full set during a cylinder head overhaul, not singly, since all guides wear at a similar rate. New guides are pressed in and then reamed to the correct stem clearance. Order enough to cover every inlet position on your head.
Why do inlet valve guides wear out?
Inlet valve guides wear because the valve stem constantly slides in the bore under heat and side load. A worn guide lets the valve rock, which draws oil past the stem seal and stops the valve sealing on its seat. Typical signs are oil smoke and lost compression.
Does this guide fit both naturally aspirated and turbo diesel engines?
This inlet valve guide fits the 2.5 naturally aspirated and 2.5 turbo diesel engines in the Defender up to 2006 and the diesel Series 2, 2A and 3. It's an OEM part. Check your head casting when overhauling, as guides are reamed to suit the valve stem on assembly.
