Frequently asked questions

What does the coolant bypass hose 574871 do in the 2.25L petrol cooling circuit?
The bypass hose 574871 forms the thermostat bypass circuit, connecting the thermostat housing to the water pump inlet. When the thermostat is closed during warm-up, coolant recirculates through this hose rather than passing through the radiator, allowing the engine to reach operating temperature quickly on Series 2, 2A, and 3 models.
Where is the coolant bypass hose 574871 located on the engine?
The hose runs between the thermostat housing outlet at the front of the cylinder head and the water pump inlet. It's a short hose, typically visible once the top radiator hose and thermostat housing are accessible on the 2.25L petrol engine.
What are the symptoms of a failed coolant bypass hose on a 2.25L petrol Series?
A split or collapsed bypass hose disrupts the thermostat circuit, typically causing the engine to take longer to reach operating temperature or to overcool at low speeds. In some cases it can also contribute to hot spots at the water pump housing due to reduced flow.
