Frequently asked questions

What does the axle breather pipe do?
The axle breather pipe vents the rear Salisbury axle housing. It equalises internal pressure as the axle oil heats and cools, which stops that pressure forcing oil past the hub and pinion seals. Routing the vent to a raised point also helps keep water and mud out of the axle during wading.
Which axle and model does this fit?
This breather pipe fits the rear Salisbury axle on the Land Rover Series 3. The Salisbury is the heavy-duty rear axle used on long-wheelbase Series vehicles, so check your rear axle is the Salisbury type rather than the standard Rover axle before ordering.
What happens if the axle breather gets blocked?
A blocked or perished axle breather lets pressure build inside the axle as the oil warms, and that pressure typically forces oil past the pinion and hub seals. Signs include oil weeping at the hubs or diff. Replacing a cracked or clogged breather protects those seals from being pushed out.
