Frequently asked questions

What does the cable-controlled heater control valve do?
The heater control valve regulates engine coolant flow into the heater matrix on the cabin heating circuit. This is the cable-operated type: a Bowden cable from the dashboard temperature control opens and closes the valve to vary cabin heat. It mounts at the front of the cylinder head on the coolant feed line.
Which Land Rovers use this cable-controlled heater valve?
This cable-controlled heater valve suits the Series 3 with the 2.25 petrol engine and early Defenders fitted with a cable-operated heater. It isn't the vacuum or later-type valve, so confirm your heater is worked by a cable from the dashboard control before ordering.
What are the signs the heater control valve needs replacing?
A failing heater control valve typically shows as weak cabin heat, heat that won't shut off, or coolant seeping around the valve body. The cable action can also stiffen or seize over time. On these early Land Rovers it's a common item in the heater coolant circuit to check when heating faults appear.
