Frequently asked questions

What does the viscous coupling do on a 300TDi?
The viscous coupling is the temperature-controlled fan drive on the 2.5L 300TDi. It sits between the water pump pulley and the cooling fan, gripping harder as under-bonnet temperature rises to drive the fan when cooling demand is high and slipping when it's low.
How do I know the viscous coupling has failed?
A failed coupling usually either seizes, giving a constant roar and a fan that won't spin freely when cold, or goes slack, letting the engine overheat in traffic because the fan no longer drives. Both point to replacement on the 300TDi.
Which models does this viscous coupling fit?
Fits the 2.5L 300TDi in the Defender (1994-1998), Discovery 1 (to VIN MA081992) and Range Rover Classic (from VIN JA610294). Use your VIN to confirm, as the Discovery 1 has a build cut-off.
Where is the viscous coupling located?
It's mounted on the front of the engine between the water pump pulley and the cooling fan, with the fan bolting to the coupling. Replacing it typically needs a large spanner and sometimes a fan clutch holding tool.
