What does the RTC4647 magnetic sump plug do?

The RTC4647 is the magnetic drain plug for the ZF 4-speed automatic transmission. It seals the oil pan at the drain point, and its magnetic tip collects ferrous wear particles from the fluid, holding them clear of the moving parts. At each fluid change you can inspect the debris it has caught.

Which gearbox and vehicles does this plug fit?

The RTC4647 fits the ZF 4-speed automatic transmission used on the Defender up to 2006, Discovery 1, Range Rover Classic and Range Rover P38. It's specific to the ZF automatic, so it won't suit manual-gearbox cars or later automatic transmissions.

Can the magnetic plug be reused, or should it be replaced?

The magnetic plug itself can usually be cleaned and reused for many fluid changes; just wipe the collected debris off the magnetic tip before refitting. The sealing washer is typically replaced each time to keep the seal leak-free.

There's metal paste on the magnetic tip, is that a problem?
