Frequently asked questions

What does the valve stem oil seal do?
The valve stem oil seal fits over the inlet valve stem and stops engine oil being drawn down the valve guide into the combustion chamber. On Series engines it controls oil consumption and keeps oil out of the inlet tract, which helps the engine run cleanly and burn less oil.
How many valve stem seals do I need?
You typically need one seal per valve, so order a full set to match your cylinder head's valve count rather than a single seal. Because the head has to come apart to reach them, most people renew every seal at the same time while the engine is open.
What are the signs the valve stem seals need replacing?
Worn valve stem seals usually show up as blue smoke from the exhaust on start-up or after the engine has idled, plus higher oil consumption. The seals harden and shrink with age and heat, letting oil seep past the guides. Replacing them restores oil control without a full rebuild.
Which Series engines do these seals fit?
These seals fit Land Rover Series I, II and IIA engines, covering the 2.25 litre petrol and the 2.0 and 2.25 litre diesel units. Valve and guide sizes changed across engine variants, so check the seal against your old one if your engine has been rebuilt or modified.
