Frequently asked questions

What does the propshaft universal joint do?
The universal joint lets the propeller shaft transmit drive through the changing angle between the transmission output and the axle as the suspension moves. A cross (spider) with four needle-roller bearing caps forms the pivoting joint. This one is a GKN unit for V8 petrol models.
How many universal joints are on a propshaft?
A propshaft typically carries a universal joint at each end, so a single shaft usually needs two. It is common to renew both UJs on a shaft together, since the second is usually worn to a similar degree once one has started to fail.
What are the signs a universal joint is worn?
A worn universal joint usually gives a clunk on taking up drive and a vibration that rises with speed, and you may find rust-coloured dust around the bearing caps. On these V8 Land Rovers a failed UJ should be renewed promptly, as a seized joint can damage the propshaft.
