Genuine Part
Genuine: Original manufacturer part. This product is the original part designed and produced by the vehicle manufacturer.
Flywheel - 5-Bearing is the rotating mass mounted to the rear flange of the crankshaft in the 5-main-bearing variant of the 2.25L and 2.5L 4-cylinder diesel engine.

The flywheel stores rotational energy to smooth out power pulses between firing strokes and provides the friction face against which the clutch driven plate engages. It also carries the ring gear for the starter motor. This item is specific to the 5-bearing engine and is not interchangeable with flywheels from the earlier 3-bearing version of the same engine family. Replacement is required when the clutch face is scored or heat-checked beyond the service limit, or when ring gear damage prevents reliable starter engagement.

Frequently asked questions

What does the ETC5780 5-bearing flywheel do?
The ETC5780 flywheel mounts to the rear flange of the crankshaft on the 5-bearing 2.25L and 2.5L 4-cylinder diesel. It stores rotational energy to smooth the engine's power pulses, provides the friction face for the clutch driven plate, and carries the ring gear for the starter motor.
What's the difference between the 5-bearing and 3-bearing flywheel?
The ETC5780 is specific to the 5-main-bearing engine and isn't interchangeable with the flywheel from the earlier 3-bearing version of the same engine family. Fitting the wrong one causes mounting and balance problems, so confirm whether your engine is the 3 or 5-bearing type before ordering.
When should the flywheel be replaced?
Replace the flywheel when the clutch face is scored or heat-checked beyond the service limit, or when ring gear damage stops the starter engaging reliably. A worn friction face causes clutch slip and judder, while damaged ring gear teeth give intermittent or grinding starting.
Which models use the ETC5780 flywheel?
The ETC5780 5-bearing flywheel fits Series 2, 2A and 3 with the 2.25L diesel, and the Defender with 2.25L and 2.5L naturally aspirated diesel and 2.5L turbo diesel, all in 5-bearing form. It's a Genuine Land Rover part and also carries reference ERC4660.
