Hub Oil Seal - Inner for the front and rear wheel hubs, seating around the stub axle.

The seal runs on the stub axle to retain hub lubricant and exclude water, dirt and grit from the wheel bearing area. A failed seal allows oil or grease loss and contaminant ingress, leading to bearing wear. Two are fitted per axle.

Note: FRC8221 has been incorrectly superseded to this part by Land Rover - the correct replacement for FRC8221 is the heavier-duty RTC3511.

How many inner hub seals are needed?
Two inner hub oil seals are fitted per axle, one at each hub. Renew them as a set when overhauling the hubs or replacing wheel bearings, since the seal is disturbed during that job and an old seal won't reseal reliably.
What are the signs the hub oil seal needs replacing?
A worn hub oil seal typically shows as grease or oil weeping around the hub, or contamination reaching the wheel bearings. Left unsealed it lets water and grit in, which accelerates bearing wear. Replace the seal whenever the hub is stripped or the bearings are renewed.
