Cylinder Head Locating Dowel, a precision alignment dowel used at the cylinder head and block joint.

The dowel sits in matching bores across a machined joint face and holds the two components in exact register during assembly, so the head gasket, coolant and oil ports and the bolt holes align correctly. On the 1.8L K-Series it locates the cylinder head to the block; on the 2.5L KV6 it locates the block to the ladder frame.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cylinder head locating dowel used for?
The cylinder head locating dowel is a precision alignment dowel that sits in matching bores across the machined joint face. It holds the components in exact register during assembly so the head gasket, coolant and oil ports and bolt holes line up correctly. It's used on the Freelander 1 1.8L K-Series.
How many locating dowels are needed?
Locating dowels are typically fitted in pairs across the cylinder head joint to register the head to the block. Check how many your engine uses when it's stripped, as a missing or damaged dowel can let the head shift during assembly. This dowel suits the Freelander 1 K-Series.
Should the locating dowel be replaced during a head gasket job?
Replace locating dowels if they're corroded, distorted or a loose fit when the cylinder head is off. A worn dowel can't hold the head in precise register, which risks gasket misalignment. On the Freelander 1 K-Series, sound dowels can usually be reused.
