Temperature Sensor is the engine coolant temperature sensor for the V8 EFI petrol engine, mounted in the inlet manifold coolant passage.

It measures coolant temperature and feeds the signal to the engine management system, which uses the reading to adjust fuelling and ignition timing as the engine warms to operating temperature.

Frequently asked questions

What is the MEK100160L temperature sensor used for?
The MEK100160L is the engine coolant temperature sensor for the V8 EFI petrol engine. It sits in the inlet manifold coolant passage and feeds coolant temperature to the engine management system, which adjusts fuelling and ignition timing during warm-up. It's fitted to Discovery 2 and Range Rover P38 V8 petrol models.
Which Land Rover models does this coolant temperature sensor fit?
This coolant temperature sensor fits the Discovery 2 (1998-2004) V8 EFI petrol from VIN 3A818214, and the Range Rover P38 (1994-2001) 4.0L and 4.6L V8 EFI petrol from VIN XA410482. Check your VIN against these breakpoints before ordering, as earlier builds use a different sensor.
What are the signs this coolant temperature sensor needs replacing?
A failing coolant temperature sensor typically causes hard cold starts, poor idle, black smoke, or erratic gauge readings on the V8 petrol. The ECU may log a coolant sensor fault and fall back to a default fuelling map. Replacing the sensor usually restores correct warm-up fuelling and timing.
Is fitting this coolant temperature sensor a DIY job?
Fitting the coolant temperature sensor is typically straightforward, as it threads into the inlet manifold coolant passage. You'll usually need to catch some coolant and unplug the connector. It's generally achievable at home with basic hand tools, though the coolant system should be topped up and bled afterwards.
