Track Rod Adjusting Shaft is the threaded centre bar of the steering track rod assembly, into which the track rod ends are screwed.

Rotating the shaft changes the effective length of the track rod, setting front wheel toe (tracking) during steering alignment. It forms the central link between the two track rod ends in the steering linkage.

Frequently asked questions

What does the track rod adjusting shaft do?
The track rod adjusting shaft is the threaded centre bar of the steering track rod that the track rod ends screw into. Turning the shaft changes the track rod's length, which sets front wheel toe during a tracking adjustment. It links the two track rod ends in the steering.
Which Land Rovers does this track rod adjusting shaft fit?
This track rod adjusting shaft fits the Land Rover Discovery 1 from 1989 to 1998 and the Range Rover Classic from 1970 to 1994. On the Discovery 1 it's also serviced as part of a track rod kit. Confirm your steering setup before ordering.
Why would the track rod adjusting shaft need replacing?
The track rod adjusting shaft usually needs replacing when its threads are seized or damaged, when it's bent from an impact, or when corrosion stops the track rod ends adjusting. A seized shaft makes setting front wheel toe impossible, which is why it's renewed during steering and alignment work.
Does fitting this shaft affect wheel alignment?
Yes, fitting the track rod adjusting shaft affects front wheel toe, since the shaft sets the track rod length. After fitting on a Discovery 1 or Range Rover Classic the tracking should be checked and reset, ideally on alignment equipment, so the steering stays true and tyres wear evenly.
