Coolant Expansion Tank Cap - pressure cap for the cooling system expansion tank, rated at 15 psi.

The cap seals the expansion tank and regulates system pressure: it holds the circuit at its working pressure to raise the coolant boiling point, venting through an integral relief valve once 15 psi is exceeded. As the engine cools, the vacuum valve allows coolant to be drawn back into the circuit, maintaining the correct system level.

Frequently asked questions

What does the coolant expansion tank cap do?
The NTC7161G coolant expansion tank cap seals the cooling system expansion tank and regulates system pressure at 15 psi. Holding pressure raises the coolant boiling point; a relief valve vents above 15 psi, and a vacuum valve draws coolant back as the engine cools. It fits TDi and petrol Defender, Discovery 1 and Range Rover Classic.
Why does the expansion tank cap need replacing?
A coolant expansion tank cap typically fails when the rubber seal hardens or the relief valve sticks, so it can't hold the rated 15 psi. That leads to overheating, coolant loss, or a tank that won't pressurise. It's a cheap, common cause of cooling problems worth ruling out first.
Does the 15 psi pressure rating matter?
Yes, the 15 psi rating matters. The cap must match the system's designed pressure so the coolant boiling point and relief point are correct. Fitting a cap with the wrong rating can cause overheating or stress the radiator and hoses. This cap is rated at 15 psi for these applications.
